In the article How to Assess Higher Thinking Skills in Your Classroom, the author says that some sort of planing tool (the most common being a blueprint which is a plan that indicates the balance of content knowledge and thinking skills intended in your learning targets) is needed to ensure that the initial learning goals set for the lesson are met. Why is it important to have some type of planning tool (like a blueprint) to lead your lessons? Would lessons be less effective without the use of a blueprint?

  1. Blueprints, like outlines for papers, ensure that your unit stays well-organized and on-topic. Personally, I find that I cannot approach papers with the same level of efficiency without an outline. Blueprints are just as important: they trace your learning goals throughout the entire unit, just like an outline can trace your thesis throughout your paper. Additionally, they give you a specific format to follow from lesson to lesson, allowing you to establish some sort of schedule/routine, so that students can feel comfortable and prepared for class.

  2. I think planning tools, like Blueprints, are extremely important to have for teaching because it gives you, well, a plan. I think Melanie's example of having an outline for a paper is probably the best analogy here because, like her, I can't write even a short paper without some sort of outline to tell me what to write. It keeps me from going off topic and losing track of what I wanted to talk about. Much like an outline, a Blueprint tells you what you're working towards and how you're going to get there so that you don't have to try and remember everything yourself and run the risk of having one of those "What was I going to do here?" moments. It gives you the layout you want to follow and, even if you end up changing things as you're going through it, it still gives you a basis and a general outline for what you want to do.

  3. I agree with Melanie and Ashley that Blueprint is important in terms of having a plan and further addressing the topic and being able to encourage higher-order thinking

  4. I agree! Blueprint ensure that lessons are organized and well-managed. When teaching we need a plan and I believe blueprints allow us to do that.
